White Sand First, Everything Else Later

We cannot really talk about Panama City Beach summer without talking about the shoreline itself first. Twenty-seven miles of bright white sand, emerald water, and endless beach days sit at the center of the entire PCB experience.

During the hotter months, the smartest move is starting the day on the beach early in the morning before the blazing heat and humidity peak. You'll see people parasailing for bird's-eye views, jet skiing, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing under umbrellas along the shore.

With more than 96 public beach access points, finding a spot is usually not difficult at all, though popular areas like Richard Seltzer Park are especially popular thanks to their boardwalks and restroom facilities.

Local tip: Avoid the middle of the afternoon whenever possible. PCB heat during summer is no joke. Most seasoned visitors hit the beach early in the morning or closer to sunset once temperatures calm down slightly. And before entering the Gulf, always check the beach warning flags for rip currents, jellyfish, or rough surf conditions.

1. Ride the SkyWheel at Pier Park

Pier Park is where beach days usually continue after everyone leaves the sand.

The massive complex packs in shopping, restaurants, bars, live entertainment, ice cream shops, and one of the most recognizable attractions on the coast: the SkyWheel.

The climate-controlled gondolas make the ride pleasant even during peak summer heat, and the panoramic Gulf views are simply incredible, especially if you time your ride around sunset.

Afterward, stick around the area for dinner, drinks, or Friday-night fireworks during the summer season.

2. Spend a Full Day at St. Andrews State Park

If PCB's main beach areas start feeling overcrowded, join the locals and escape to St. Andrews State Park.

Located between the Gulf and St. Andrews Bay, the park features white-sand beaches, nature trails, kayaking routes, snorkeling areas, fishing spots, and quieter swimming zones that are basically everything you could want from a summer day in the Sunshine State.

Make sure to check out the Jetties if you're interested in snorkeling since the water clarity there is often much better. You'll be able to spot tropical fish, crabs, and small marine life gathering around the rocks. The nearby tidal pool is also great for families with kids, thanks to its gentler swimming conditions.

3. Take the Ferry to Shell Island

Shell Island is one of the most beautiful summer escapes around PCB, and it deserves a spot on everyone's itinerary.

This undeveloped seven-mile barrier island has no hotels, restaurants, or commercial development. Out here, it's all about dunes, white sand, clear water, seashells everywhere, and the occasional dolphin sighting offshore.

Even the ferry ride over is worth it, and once you arrive, you immediately notice the shift in atmosphere compared to the busy PCB strip.

Heads up: Bring everything you need with you. There is very little shade, no restaurants, and no real facilities once you arrive.

4. Cool Off at Shipwreck Island Waterpark

This tropical-themed park is a massive hit among families thanks to its wave pools, lazy rivers, high-speed slides, and enough water attractions to keep everyone in your summer vacation squad happy and cool.

Despite the variety of attractions, the park itself is not overly massive, which parents usually appreciate. Families can move around comfortably without constantly getting lost, exhausted, or spending half the day walking under the intense summer heat.

Heads up: The park is a seasonal attraction and is only open from April through August.

5. Book a Dolphin Cruise

The famous Sea Screamer is a very popular option for spotting playful dolphins in the Gulf. This is one of PCB's signature attractions, and another activity you should try to time around sunset so you get double the magic: captivating dolphins and warm dusk colors reflecting across the water.

If you're traveling with little ones, the more theatrical pirate-themed cruises aboard the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise are a one-of-a-kind experience that even adults end up enjoying.

6. Escape the Crowds at Conservation Park

For a more serene escape away from the summer crowds, Conservation Park offers more than 24 miles of trails winding through wetlands, pine forests, and elevated boardwalks where you can spot turtles, birds, ospreys, and other wildlife. This is also a great place to bring little ones since they usually get fascinated by the wildlife around them.

Heads up: Bring far more water than you think you need because the heat around the wetlands gets brutal by midday.

7. Try Something Ridiculously Fast on the Water

PCB summer has a very strong "why not?" vibe, which explains the popularity of jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, and every other activity capable of launching people across the Gulf at questionable speeds. Even if adrenaline-packed activities are not usually your thing, this is the place to try them. Local outfitters offer safe, beginner-friendly experiences, and the "okay, that was actually amazing" reaction afterward is extremely common.

Parasailing is perhaps the number one thing adrenaline lovers want to do here, especially because of the breathtaking Gulf views. Jet skis are also very popular during summer, particularly around calmer bay waters where dolphins love making surprise appearances.

8. Visit ZooWorld Zoological Park or Gulf World Marine Park

When afternoon thunderstorms suddenly crash the beach plans, these two spots usually save the day.

ZooWorld Zoological Park is all about close-up animal encounters, including giraffe feeding, sloths, lemurs, and even baby alligators, while Gulf World Marine Park brings you face-to-face with dolphins, sea lions, tropical birds, and marine-life shows.

And yes, the air conditioning suddenly turns into part of the attraction during July afternoons.

9. Go Fishing Like a Local

No matter if you're a pro or trying fishing for the first time, this classic Gulf Coast activity comes with an extra bonus: the views. Some visitors book deep-sea charters targeting snapper, grouper, and cobia offshore, while others prefer casting lines directly from places like Russell-Fields Pier.

One especially fun local tradition? Catch-and-cook meals. Certain seafood markets around PCB will clean your catch so nearby restaurants can prepare it fresh later the same day.

10. Check Out the New Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show in 2026

If you are heading to PCB in summer 2026, make room for this newer addition to the lineup.

The massive dinner show features acrobatic pirate battles, indoor ship scenes, live stunts, special effects, and a four-course meal all happening around a giant indoor lagoon.

A Few Heads-Ups for Summer 2026 in Panama City Beach

Book Your Rental Early

Summer is peak season in PCB, especially around Memorial Day, Fourth of July week, and weekends in June and July. The best beachfront rentals get booked quickly.

Expect Afternoon Thunderstorms

Summer storms are extremely common. Most blow through fairly quickly, but having backup indoor plans helps a lot. Popular rainy-day options include WonderWorks, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and indoor restaurants near Pier Park.

Respect Sea Turtle Nesting Areas

Sea turtles nest along PCB beaches from May through October. Avoid disturbing dunes, marked nesting zones, or turtle activity along the shoreline.
